There has to be an immense level of comfort in a first-place team losing eight of 11 and its division lead dwindling by only one half of a game. That was the case for the Toronto Raptors earlier this month while the Brooklyn Nets missed their chance to make things interesting in the Atlantic Division. As the Nets continue their slide, the Raptors visit Barclays Center tonight seeking a fifth straight win to further pad their sizable advantage in the standings. You can watch the game live on TSN1, TSN3, TSN4, TSN5 and TSN GO at 7:30pm et/4:30pm pt, or listen live on TSN Radio 1050 Toronto. The Raptors (31-15) entered their poor stretch with a 9 1/2-game lead over second-place Brooklyn (18-27) on Dec. 29. After a Jan. 21 loss at Memphis completed the 3-8 slump, their lead had been trimmed to nine with the Nets going 4-8 in that span. Brooklyn, which will remain without Deron Williams against Toronto, has since lost three straight and seen the deficit balloon to 12 1/2. A return to offensive normalcy has spearheaded Torontos recovery. The Eastern Conferences top scoring team (106.0 points per game) had been limited to 98.7 on the slide, but has averaged 107.0 since. Wednesdays 119-102 home win over Sacramento marked the Raptors best total in a victory since winning 123-104 at Utah on Dec. 3. Against the Kings, 65 of those points came in the second half. We played like a winning team in the second half, a team thats on a mission, coach Dwane Casey said. Their 17 3-pointers were their most since making a franchise-record 21 on March 13, 2005, and their 50.0 percent effort turned the page on a seven-game stretch in which they shot 26.3 percent from beyond the arc. Guard Greivis Vasquez had 18 points and hit 4 of 5 from long range, while reserve guard Lou Williams scored a game-high 27. We want to continue this winning streak and then continue to get better, Vasquez said. A loss to the Nets, who have dropped six straight at home to match their longest skid in Brooklyn, would curb any progress. The franchise hasnt lost seven straight at home since Feb. 3-22, 2012. The Nets 2-11 overall stretch has included just 90.7 points per game while shooting 42.9 percent, including 26.7 from 3-point range. Wednesdays 113-102 loss in Atlanta completed a 1-3 road trip that wasnt quite as embarrassing as the previous two games. Altogether on the losing streak, theyve been at a 114.7-86.3 scoring disadvantage while allowing the Los Angeles Clippers, Jazz and Hawks to shoot 52.9 percent. With Joe Johnson and Jarrett Jack revived, Nets coach Lionel Hollins viewed the loss to the top team in the East as more of a positive for his teams direction. Johnson, who was held to 15 points over the previous two games while playing under 29 minutes in each due to knee tendinitis, had a team-high 26 points, and Jack had 14 points and a career-high 13 assists against one turnover. The snowstorm, and the (postponement of Mondays home game against Portland), we got three days off, Hollins told the teams official website. We got some pep in our step. Joes tendinitis was able to cool down a little bit. Jarrett was able to sit for a couple of days so we came out with a lot more pep. Williams (rib) has returned to practice but will miss his 11th straight game, according to the teams official Twitter feed. The Raptors opened the season series with a 105-89 home win Dec. 17 for their third win in four games against the Nets. Torontos Kyle Lowry had 20 points and is averaging 24.0 while shooting 53.2 percent in the last three meetings.
. -- The San Francisco 49ers have re-signed cornerback Perrish Cox to a one-year contract.
.com) - Mike Miller scored a season-high 21 points in a rare start and the Cleveland Cavaliers bounced back from their worst loss of the season with a 95-91 win over the Brooklyn Nets.
. -- Jack Del Rio only wanted to talk about the Cowboys, not the Trojans.
. -- Center Max Unger and tight end Zach Miller are both probable for the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday against the New York Giants and Percy Harvins recovery continues to be slow.
.S. international midfielder Michael Bradley is complete. PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil -- Argentina beat Nigeria 3-2 in their last World Cup group match on Wednesday, with Lionel Messi and Ahmed Musa scoring two goals each before Marcos Rojo kneed in the winner. Argentina won Group F while Nigeria also advanced despite the loss, becoming the first African team in the round of 16 in Brazil. Messi had his best match of the World Cup so far, scoring twice in the first half to boost his tournament total to four goals, and repeatedly cutting up Nigerias defence with dazzling runs and clever passes. "We played against a team that wanted to play," Messi said. "I think we saw a good Argentina. We need to continue on this path." The Argentina captain needed less than three minutes to finish Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeamas clean sheet in Brazil, slamming in the rebound after Angel Di Marias shot bounced off the post. Nigeria replied within a minute as Musa cut in from the left and beat Sergio Romero with a curling shot toward the far post. Nearing halftime Messi tested Enyeama with a 25-meter free kick that the goalkeeper struggled to push to a corner. Having found his aim, Messi was ice cold when Nigeria gave up another free kick just moments later from a slightly shorter distance. This time Enyeama was stunned as the ball hooked over the wall and slipped in just inside the post. "Messi is one of heck of a player, hes blessed. You cant take it away from him," Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi said. "Messi is from Jupiter, he is different." The second half started at the same furious pace as the first, with two goals within the first five minutes. First Musa took advantage of confusion in the Argentine defence to score his second. Then Rojo made it 3-2 as he got his right knee on a corner kick three minutes later. Both teams continued to chase more goals but the intensity dropped off someewhat as Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella substituted Messi after the hour-mark.dddddddddddd The Barcelona wizard enjoyed the space he was given by Nigeria, which surged forward rather than locking down in defence like Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iran did against Argentina. He has scored in each of the teams three matches. Finding more space to attack, Argentina created more chances than in its previous games, but its defence caved in on both of Musas goals. Another concern for Argentina: Striker Sergio Aguero was injured in the first half, and replaced by Ezequiel Lavezzi. "I think we had a lot of chances, and could have scored a few more goals," Sabella said. Tens of thousands of Argentine fans had travelled to Porto Alegre for the match, taunting Brazilian spectators by singing "Maradona is greater than Pele" at the 44,000-capacity Beira-Rio Stadium. The Brazilians booed and held up five fingers to remind the Argentines of how many World Cups theyve won. Argentina has two. Meanwhile, tragedy struck in Nigeria before the match, as an explosion rocked a shopping mall in the capital, Abuja, and police said at least 21 people were killed. The blast came as Nigerians were preparing to watch the World Cup match. Many shops at the mall have TV screens but it was unclear if the explosion was timed to coincide with the match, which started an hour later. ------ Nigeria: Vincent Enyeama; Efe Ambrose, Kenneth Omeruo, Joseph Yobo, Juwon Oshaniwa; Ahmed Musa, Ogenyi Onazi, John Obi Mikel, Michael Babatunde (Okechukwu Uchebo, 66); Peter Odemwingie (Uche Nwofor, 80), Emmanuel Emenike.
