The Kansas City Royals try to punch their ticket to the World Series for the first time since 1985 on Wednesday, as they attempt to complete a four-game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles in the American League Championship Series. Kansas City has won all seven of its playoff games this October and is now one victory away from appearing in the Fall Classic for the first time since beating the St. Louis Cardinals 29 years ago. Should it close out the series on Wednesday, KC will become the first team to open a single postseason with eight straight wins. Dating back to that wonderful 1985 season, the Royals have now won 10 straight playoff games. Those 10 straight wins are tied for third all-time with the San Francisco Giants (2012, 14), Oakland Athletics (1989-90) and the New York Yankees (1937-39, 41). The Yankees own the top postseason win streak with 12, having accomplished it twice (1927-28, 32 and 1998-99). Kansas City has gotten as far as it has thanks to some timely hitting and outstanding relief pitching. It was more of the same on Tuesday, as Billy Butlers sixth inning sacrifice fly scored Jarrod Dyson and the Royals held on for a 2-1 win. Four Kansas City relievers combined for four perfect innings in the win, as Jason Frasor (2-0) worked a perfect top of the sixth in relief of Jeremy Guthrie before the three-headed monster of Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis and Greg Holland protected the one-run lead and gave the Royals a 3-0 advantage in this best-of-seven set. To be in this position right here, its tremendous, because theres times you feel like you dont know if (success) going to happen, Butler said. (General manager) Dayton (Moore) has done a great job of drafting tremendous players, and the citys been reaping the benefits of that and so are we. Lorenzo Cain followed up a four-hit performance in Saturdays Game 2 by going 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Eric Hosmer also had two hits for the Royals. Cain is 8-for-12 (.667) with five runs scored, two doubles, an RBI and two walks in the ALCS. Cain sits one hit shy of Willie Wilsons 1985 franchise record for hits in a single ALCS. I told the guys to get ready to go, make sure your head is on right, get locked in and try to win another ballgame, Cain said. The Orioles managed just three hits as a team, with J.J. Hardy knocking in their lone run with a second-inning double. (The Royals) have been getting that big hit, that big timely hit that we havent been able to get, said Orioles first baseman Steve Pearce. Of course, there has only been one team to rally from three games down to win a best-of-seven series and that was the 2004 Boston Red Sox, who stunned the Yankees. You never know what can happen when youre playing with house money, Baltimores Adam Jones said. Were both franchises who werent supposed to be here, but were here and were grinding it out. Hoping to close it out for the Royals this afternoon will be lefty Jason Vargas, who hasnt pitched since starting Game 1 of the ALDS against the Los Angeles Angels back on Oct. 2. Vargas overcame a rough September and pitched well in that one, allowing just two runs in six innings. Ive never had this much rest, so I couldnt give you a good guideline on what Ill be looking for, Vargas said. But Ill be ready to go and be ready to try to execute my game plan and execute pitches. Baltimore, meanwhile, will have an equally rested hurler in right-hander Miguel Gonzalez, who will get the call for the first time since Sept. 28. Gonzalez was 10-9 this year with a 3.23 ERA this season for the Orioles. Im excited. Im excited to go out there and give my team a chance to win a ballgame, Gonzalez said. The Royals won four of seven from the Orioles during the regular season, outscoring Baltimore 26-18. If necessary, Game 5 will be played on Thursday in Kansas City.

. - Bryan Price sat down in the cushy chair.
. Whenever United loses, its crisis. When other top teams slip up, its the quirky nature of the Premier League. The predictable reaction speaks to the sky-high expectations for a team proven perennial contender and 13 times Premier League champion.

FIVE QUICK HOOPS THOUGHTS 1. RUDY GAY (Kings): Bottom line, it didnt work out the way Raptors fans had hoped it would. I give GM Masai Ujiri credit for recognizing that this was a contract and a playing situation that was going to hamper the development of the franchise and individual players and made his move. I love coach Mike Malone but I feel for him. Good Luck trying to get Derrick Cousins and Rudy Gay thinking about the needs of teammates when theyre such proud/competitive guys who believe they can score on anyone. I personally like Rudy Gay; hes a first-class individual who carries himself in a nice way. Hes a good man. On the court, he has some limitations and hell have loads of pressure on him in Sac-town to live up to the big money. If he cuts down on turnovers, starts to attack the basket with greater determination, tightens up his shot selection and trusts his teammates abilities and is willing to give them the ball it can work for him. A lot to ask, though. I like this trade for the Raptors; both on the court and with the cap flexibility. 2. GREIVIS VASQUEZ (Raptors): Like this addition. They have an option on him in the offseason and also could move him before the trade deadline to add another piece. Hes a guy who will give the ball up and is a nice pick and roll player. Plays with energy and enthusiasm. I have no problem if he and Kyle Lowry (he could be dealt as well with his expiring contract) play at times together on the court. Like the leadership, play-making, ball handling and passing that two lead guards give you and its a nice luxury to have. The Raptors needed to improve this area and they did. As crazy as this sounds, the Raptors could very well be better with these new four players than the previous mix. That wont go over well with Tank Nation.dddddddddddd 3. AMIR JOHNSON (Raptors): Good to see him flying around the court and playing with such passion and productivity. He was awesome Sunday night in LA. He will benefit from the trade. He thrives as a roller in the screen and roll game, and hes so efficient in the lane that when you give it to him in there you feel really confident that hell make the shot. Considering all the chippies that Rudy Gay missed in the lane as well as all of his turnovers, I feel quite confident that with the redistribution of touches to guys like Johnson that Raps will have better chemistry and ball movement. Obviously, Gay is a really talented guy yet many times, less is more. 4. KOBE BRYANT (Lakers): Looked really rusty and a ways away from his normal level. Its going to take a while. Normally you dont see an eight turnover 2-9 FG percentage performance from him and I doubt youll see that in a few weeks. In time, as he gets into rhythm and in game shape, his game will gradually come back. Thats a major injury to come back from in less than eight months. Not easy, yet when I think of great players/competitors, hes at the top of the list. In 4-6 weeks from now hell be back to/close to his normal self. 5. JEFF HORNACEK (Suns): Love the job hes doing in Phoenix. His team plays really hard and they play together and share the ball. He has incorporated a style of play that suits the philosophy that theyll use in their pursuit of players that fit their model. Hes gotten complete Buy-In and has done as good a job as any coach in the league so far this season, based upon the talent at his disposal. Always really important for a fist year head coach to lay the foundation for how he wants his team to play and look. At 20 games in, he is succeeding deservedly so .
